Cercis occidentali
(Cistus Orchid Rockrose)

Cistus are sun loving, fast growing, drought tolerant, no maintenance, beautiful shrubs. This Cistus blooms with a profusion of showy white blossoms for a few weeks in spring. This Cistus has deep green leafs that have a very sweet resinous smell when warmed by the sun. Plant Cistus in tough terrain, where other plants will struggle, along driveways, in rock gardens, on cut banks, and other hard to landscape areas. Cistus tend to grow in pleasing shrub shape, do not prune cistus hard, rather remove old dead wood, and pinch back green tips to shape. More info

Bailey Lane Nursery, Redding, CA: We are is a family owned nursery, located in Whitmore, CA (near Redding, California) growing rare plants , trees, shrubs, flowering perennials, groundcover's and much more. Gardening in and barong Redding (CA) with the extreme hot and dry conditions area is challenging. The owners of the Nursery, Jim Bailey and Cleo Lane, have been growing plants in this area and its Mediterranean climate for many years. Through this website (redding-plant-nursery.com), and giving information at the local Saturday Redding's farmers market (Shasta Growers associations Redding Farmers Market)  we are extending the plants  and plant knowledge that we have accumulated over the years.

Horticultural background of the staff of Bailey Lane's Nursery, Redding, CA: Both owners of Bailey Lane Nursery have a solid horticultural background and years of experiences in the horticultural trade.

Jim Bailey's horticultural background: Jim Bailey completed his Horticulture degree program at Shasta College. After graduation Jim went to work as a propagator for Bruce Wendt ’s Gray Pine Farms in Oak Run, where he perfected propagation and good nursery practices.  Jim left his propagation job go work for a newly developing Arboretum at Turtle Bay Exploration Park. During his seven plus years at the Arboretum Jim has had numerous opportunities to work in diverse areas of landscaping, irrigation, and plant propagation in the Redding area. As a propigationist Jim has done numerous California native revegitation projects for wildlife habitat restoration, wetland restoration, erosion control native plant restoration for mitigation, native tree revegitation, plant care and selection for the California native plant garden. Jim’s love of water conservation is one reason he loves California native plants, drought tolerant plants, sedums, succulents, Mediterranean plants, and grasses. Jim is passionate about the use of drip irrigation to conserve water. As a professional Horticulturist Jim is an excellent propigationist, with considerable experience as an irrigation specialist, native plant restorations, plant expert, and outstanding gardener/landscaper.

Cleo Lane's horticultural background: Cleo Lane was raised in Trinity County by a family whom grew among many other things 10,000 bulbs of organic garlic a year for sell at farmer markets. Her strong passion for gardening and wilderness has led her to seek employment for the Forest Service, nurseries, and the Arboretum. Cleo is continually seeking to enrich her knowledge about the environment and plants.  She is enrolled to complete her Horticulture degree at Shasta College. Cleo worked as a Horticulturist for Turtle Bay Mc. Connell Arboretum and Gardens in the year before it was open to the public. During her employment Cleo did propagation work, landscape installation, landscape care, plant propagation, selection and planning for plants in Medicinal Plant Garden.  Cleo participated in the creation of many diverse drought tolerant plantings, working with Mediterranean plants, grasses, succulents, California natives, to create artistic and sustainable landscaping, drought tolerant, and native plant gardens. As an active community member and supporter of local food sheds Cleo has worked on a grant to create a school garden, and for a grant aimed at empower a local native group for self-reliant food production. Cleo’s personal interest in plants is for their uses for food, medicine and fiber. Edible landscaping, traditional medicinal gardens, culinary herb gardens, vegetable gardens, and sustainable gardening practices designed to facilitate self-sufficiency are of particular interest to Cleo. As an artist Cleo enjoys designing visual welcoming, and texturally interesting gardens, full of vibrancy and depth. Experience in horticultural, environmental, and agricultural fields gives Cleo a uniquely holistic experiential knowledge of sustainability and useful landscapes.
